Mjareb’s Advice

Trojans… And Phishing… And Malware – Oh My!

Don’t let the name “antivirus” fool you – they protect you from so much more. Viruses are not the only nasty things lurking online just waiting to infect your PC, Mac and smartphone. Today, Trojans, malware and phishing are more common threats. Malware piggybacks on seemingly innocent-looking software and apps you download to your device. It then roots itself deep in your system, where it remains dormant until it “wakes up” and starts wreaking havoc on your device – and by then it’s a nightmare to get rid of. Trojans are a “good” example of malware: named after the famous Ancient Greek story, this vicious app hides it’s true intent, tricking you to download it before spreading its malicious code all across your PC and even entire home network. Phishing is another threat you need to consider when looking for antivirus software. Phishing is an attempt to trick or coerce you into giving away personal details like your credit card number and bank account information. It is often done by emails or fake websites that resemble familiar and trusted services like PayPal or Amazon.

Ransomware Is The New Malware

While malware is more concerned in just sabotaging your device, ransomware is much more sinister. Hackers will try and trick you into downloading a Trojan, just like with every other malware, but this Trojan isn’t about deleting your files – it’s about blocking access to your computer. This Trojan will open a “back door” into your device, allowing hackers to steal your data, and hide it behind a firewall or a password protected digital barrier. They are more than willing to give you your files back – for a price. They are essentially holding all your files and data for ransom – hence the name “ransomware.”

Be Careful What You Click On

For malware or viruses to gain access to your computer, you need to “invite them in.” Of course, you never do that on purpose, but hackers are getting very good at tricking people to trust them and install their malicious software. That is why you need to be very careful of what you click on when you’re online. You might get an email claiming you need to change your account password, or that there’s an amazing sale waiting for you – all you have to do is follow a link. The link can then download a malware straight into your device, or send you to a fake website that steals your account details when you attempt to log in. There are two ways to avoid such dangers: First, examine the link carefully – legit links are often short and have the name of the site/service right at the beginning. If you’re not sure, just go into your browser and type in the address of the site yourself, thus avoiding the link altogether. Don’t be tempted to click on links or files you don’t recognize, no matter what they promise you – especially in emails and social media. You have no way of knowing where they’ll lead you or what dangers you’re exposing your PC to.

Make Regular Backups

For all the reasons listed above – destructive malware, nasty Trojans, and determined hackers – you need to backup all your data often. The best way to protect yourself and your data is to make regular offline backups. Yes, you can also back everything up on one of the best cloud storage services available, but as ransomware becomes more of a threat, you should also keep a copy of everything you can’t afford to lose on a separate, external drive. That way, all your important data will be safe from any outside interference, infections or malicious interventions.

Common Antivirus Questions Answered

How Does Antivirus Software Work?

Antivirus software is designed to both prevent malicious software attacks and remove them from your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices. Malware includes Trojans, worms, spyware, ransomware and other attempts to get to your sensitive data. To adequately protect you and your devices, antiviruses perform a set of functions that are designed to cover every vulnerability:
  • Scan files and folders on your device for malware patterns in the code
  • Provide real-time protection by automatically scanning every file you download
  • Remove or warn of any malicious code found on your system
  • Scan your emails for suspicious activity or messages
  • Provide you with a “health-status” of your device

Why Do I Need An Antivirus?

ILuckily for us, computer viruses are no longer rampant like they use to be. But there are still terrible people out there who take joy at creating digital havoc or want to steal your private data and even identity. So, you do need antivirus software, but not just to stop viruses. You need an antivirus to protect your online activity. More and more of our lives are conducted online, and hackers are taking advantage of that fact. Those of you who use Microsoft Windows are especially vulnerable to attacks, but in recent years we see a spike of malware and Trojans that are aimed at Mac and Android devices as well. iOS is still relatively safe, but it won’t be long before hackers manage to outsmart Apple and breach the iPhone and iPad security. Around 60,000 new malware and Trojans are created daily, so the best antivirus needs to be able to deal with new threats on the fly and work on every platform. Avast Antivirus supports all platforms, even Linux, and both it and Avira update their database frequently to combat emerging hazards.

Do I Need An Antivirus With Windows 10?

Windows 10 has a built-in antivirus software called Windows Defender. For the most part, it does a decent job of protecting your Windows PC from the most common threats. But (and that’s a big “But”), there’s always a chance that something will slip through the cracks. To be absolutely sure your PC is entirely protected, an additional security layer is recommended. You should also consider that only the most updated version of Windows Defender (Creators Update or later) include protection against ransomware. Antivirus software often gets the latest protection features much sooner, and many now employ artificial intelligence for better threat detection. Plus, most of them come with a slew of extra features like parental control, password manager, email protection, and even VPN.

Should I Use Free Antivirus Software?

A paid antivirus always has more features and offer more comprehensive protection than a free antivirus. The free versions are just like Windows Defender – they are a decent first line of defense, but they don’t cover every front. The paid versions have the same features as the free ones, with additional features such as spam filters, customizable firewalls, file shredders, wifi monitoring and much, much more. When it comes to antivirus – you get what you pay for. If you only want the most basic of online protection and no more than that – use a free antivirus. If you want the peace of mind that comes from knowing you are completely protected online, you should opt for the premium version. In our online way of life, the added security is more than worth it.

Do I Need Antivirus For My Phone?

The short answer is yes and no. Let us explain. The more popular Android and iOS devices become, the more of a target they are for the bad guys. Luckily, Google and Apple do a fantastic job at monitoring the apps that go on their marketplaces, and any malicious ones are quickly removed. If you’re only installing apps from Google Play or App Store, you don’t really need to worry about viruses or malware. However, if you choose to download app APKs from other sources, you should rely on the additional protection a mobile antivirus provides. These antivirus apps do have other benefits, like letting you remotely lock or wipe a lost or stolen phone, back up your files and clean unnecessary data that slows down your device. But make sure to only use antivirus apps by companies you recognize (like the ones of this list) – there have been instances of Trojans masquerading as antivirus apps in the past.

It’s time to take the final step and fully protect your PC, Mac, iOS and Android devices. Show those hackers they can’t just waltz into your computer and steal the data they want. Start fighting back by beefing up your cyber-security.
Our AskMjareb experts answered the most burning antivirus questions and curated a list of the best antivirus software available on the market today. Avast, Kaspersky, Avira or AVG – they can all get the job done, but hopefully, we helped you decide which one is the antivirus for you.

Why use online travel sites

Book cheap flights, and find the best hotel deals for your next family holiday, business trip or weekend getaway. Planning the perfect vacation is fun, but also a lot of work. You need to pick an airline, decide on a hotel that accommodates all your needs, and select which of the many locations and attractions you’re going to visit. The best travel sites can help you choose the best vacation spots around the world, find cheap flights to get you there, and the best hotels for your stay. Forget travel agencies – book your next dream vacation online.

Mjareb’s Advice

Always compare prices online

Each day, hundreds of airlines fly to tens of thousands of destinations where dozens of hotels wait to house tourists from all over the world. There’s just no way to find the best prices and deals by searching through all of those airline and hotel websites, or making so many, many calls. In the past, we used to have travel agencies to do that for us, but now, thanks to online booking sites like HotelsCombined and Tajawal Flights we can do it ourselves and save money in the process. So when planning a vacation or a business trip, always compare prices, flight times, and conditions online – it’s easier, friendlier, and much cheaper.

Know when to book

Either book as far in advance as you can or wait until the very last minute. Booking in advance can guarantee lower prices in general, since demand hasn’t sky-rocketed yet. However, if you want to be more spontaneous, booking a flight or even a hotel at the very last minute possible can net you incredibly low prices as airlines and hotels try and fill the last available seats or rooms by offering discounted rates. The day of your booking can also affect the prices you see. Data suggests that Sunday is the best day to find cheap flights online, while Wednesday is the worst.

Be flexible

The best thing you can do to save money is not to insist on specific dates, airlines or even airport. Some small carriers can have “surprise” discounts as departure time nears so you can find a cheap seat for flights to Europe, America or more exotic destinations. If you don’t mind traveling to an airport that’s a little bit further away from the city, you can find cheaper flights by the airlines that use it as their hub. But the easiest way to save on hotels and flights is to be flexible with your travel dates. When booking online, choose an entire month, not a specific week or weekend. That way you can find the cheapest dates available for flights and lodging and plan your trip around those.

Beware hidden fees

While most online hotel booking sites don’t charge you more for using them (otherwise why would you?), there might still be fees that are not immediately clear. Cleaning fees, cancellation fees, extra money for breakfast (which you should skip anyway since eating at a local cafe can be cheaper than paying for a hotel breakfast) may all be included in the deal, so pay careful attention to the fine print before you book a hotel online. The same is true for flights. Make sure in advance that your ticket includes luggage, meals and the option to select a seat. Of course, you don’t have to pay for any of these, but just be aware that purchasing these options at the airport, at the time of your flight, is more costly – much more.

Loyalty can pay off, but not always

Many airlines and hotels offer loyalty programs, and some online booking sites have them, too. For example, Hotels.com gifts you a free night for every 10 nights booked, and Booking.com sends you “secret deals” just for subscribing to their newsletter.
However, when it comes to flights, you might want to be a little disloyal. You can often save some money by booking a return flight with a different airline. Flying.com lets you select your flights separately, so you can choose the cheapest ones or those that are most convenient for you.

Travel insurance

Finding the best hotel deals and cheapest flights is the lion’s share of booking your perfect vacation online, but you mustn’t forget travel insurance. Finding the right type of coverage is crucial for additional peace of mind when flying abroad. This is especially true if you’re traveling with children or are concerned your flight might be canceled. There are several options you should look into, like an annual cover instead of a single-trip policy if you travel a lot throughout the year. You might also want to consider additional coverage, like for risky activities such as scuba diving or skiing, and driving overseas if your car insurance doesn’t cover it.

Common cheap travel questions answered

How to find cheap flights?

There are many tips to save money on flights. The first and most obvious one is to compare flights online. Using only the best travel sites, like the ones on this page, will guarantee you the best deals currently available. However, there are a few other tricks you should try, as well. First, always search for flights online using incognito or private browsing mode. Sites use cookies to see which destinations you are searching for, and tend to bump the price a bit for those you search the most. Another clever trick is to book a flight that has a stop-over in your desired destination and then continues on to a different destination. These are called “hidden city” flights, and they can sometimes be cheaper than a direct flight to the same city. So in reality, you book a flight that goes from city A to city C with a stop-over in city B. You simply get off the plane in city B instead of continuing all the way to the final destination. You do need to be careful not to accidentally send your luggage to the final destination. Taking only carry-on luggage with you should solve that problem.

How to find the best hotel deals?

Again, the best hotel deals are almost always found in online hotel booking sites. Comparison sites generally have the best offers available, but here are a few extra tips to help you discover even better discounts. Here’s a nice trick: take advantage of the free cancelation period. Hotels usually allow you to cancel your reservation up to 48 or even 24 hours before your stay starts, so if you see that the room price has dropped since you booked it – simply cancel your reservation and immediately rebook at the lower rate. You can also wait until the very last minute and try to snag a better price due to a recent cancelation. If a guest canceled their reservation, the hotel would most likely offer the room for a lower price in an attempt to draw in a replacement guest. This can be quite risky as the hotel could be full and not be offering last minute deals. A more conventional way to save is to book flights and hotels together as a package, which can sometimes lead to savings on both. If you’re brave, you can try booking a hotel room with a recently-opened property. New hotels are eager for business and good reviews to generate a positive buzz online. It’s an excellent opportunity to get a good room for a lower price, and even receive an upgrade once you’re there.

How to find cheap hotels in Mecca?

Mecca is a popular destination year-round, but especially during the holy month of Ramadan, especially the last 10 days, and the first 10 days of Al-Hija (the 12th Lunar month in the Islamic calendar), when the Hajj is performed. If you are planning to participate in the annual pilgrimage, Askmjareb suggests you start booking hotels online as early as possible. Prices rise up quickly for both Hajj and Ramadan periods, so booking a hotel as soon as you can will save you a lot of money in the long run. The best travel sites let you book a hotel between a year and a year and a half in advance, so plan accordingly. Since Mecca is such a sought after destination during those times, we don’t recommend relying on last-minute cancellations. Any cancelation will be immediately scooped up. If you’re looking for another way to lower the price of your stay in Mecca, bear in mind that the further away a hotel is from the Haram, the cheaper it will be. It might be inconvenient, but if you’re adamant about finding cheap hotels in Mecca, that’s something you should consider. For really cheap hotels in Holly Makkah, know that prices tend to drop a week or two after Hajj, so that’s a great time to visit the city as a tourist or for Umrah. After Hajj, all pilgrims are supposed to leave, or they will have to perform Tawaf again. As hotels become empty, prices begin to drop sharply.

How do hotels cater to Muslim guests?

When traveling outside of Muslim countries, Muslims should bear in mind that not all attractions and hotels offer the facilities and amenities they are used to. When booking flight tickets, it’s important to remember and check the Halal meal option. In some cheap airlines, a meal will cost extra, so you can choose bring your own food aboard the plane, thus avoiding the Halal issue altogether. When it comes to hotels, though, there’s more to take into consideration. It’s crucial to check in advance if the hotel offers Halal food and prayer facilities. You can find Muslim-friendly hotels that are equipped with Halal-certified kitchens and Halal-certified restaurants on the premises. You might also want to check if there’s a mosque near the hotel or a Halal restaurant nearby you can go to for meals. Furthermore, Salaah facilities and designated prayer areas are other essential decision factors when selecting a hotel. In Muslim countries, you’ll often find a Quran in each guest room, a prayer mat, and sometimes even Qibla directions marked on the walls or by a sign. It’s rare to see these in non-Muslim countries, but since Muslims are a fast-growing market segment, it won’t be long before at least some of these amenities are available anywhere upon request. In the meantime, there are plenty of mobile apps on both Android and iPhone that can provide you with Qibla directions anywhere you are, so you don’t have to rely on on-location signs.

Compare The Best Car Insurance Companies In The UAE

Why Do I Need Car Insurance?

Car insurance covers you, your vehicle, and other people or property in the case you are involved in a car accident.
It protects you from the potentially devastating financial and medical costs that can result from such an accident. That is one of the reasons car insurance is mandatory by law in the UAE. If you own a vehicle, you have to have insurance or risk a fine of AED 500, four black points, and even vehicle confiscation for seven days. The insurance required by law is designed to protect both the driver and anyone (and anything) they might crash into.

We’ll explain using two scenarios:

  1. You are involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault, and suddenly you have all these medical bills to pay. Thanks to car insurance, these costs are covered by the guilty party’s insurance company.
  2. You accidentally crash your car into a storefront. The costs of damages can be in the tens of thousands, and not everyone can afford to pay that. Luckily, your legally-mandated insurance covers any damages you may cause to a third-party, like the store owner, or someone standing by who got hurt.

Car insurance gives drivers, cyclists, joggers and property owners the peace of mind they need on the road, and a safety net should the worst happen.

Why Compare Car Insurance Online?

Comparing car insurance online can save you a lot of money and time.
Scanning deals from multiple insurance companies can help you narrow down exactly the type of coverage you require. That way you won’t pay for anything you don’t need. But finding the best UAE car insurance can be a long and arduous task. There’s a lot of phone calls to make, and a lot of information to sift through.
That’s why you need to use an online car insurance comparison site. In under an hour, you can receive the best deals from leading car insurance companies that are relevant to you and your vehicle.

You can also net up to a 20% discount on your policy thanks to a generous No Claims Bonus. Sites like Souqalmal work with all the leading providers across the UAE, like Al Buhaira National Insurance, Dubai Insurance, and Al Sagr National Insurance. You can take advantage of all the deals, offers and coupons it has on hand for every insurer you prefer, and every policy you decide on. It’s all about getting the best value for your money.

What Does Car Insurance Cover?

Car insurance covers any damage to your vehicle or any damage it may cause others in a traffic accident. It can also include cases of theft, fire, flood, natural wear and tear, and more. But it depends on your level of coverage.

Car insurance has three levels of coverage:

1. Third-Party Car Insurance
Third-party insurance covers damages caused to another party, be it a person or property, by your car. This is the most basic level of coverage and the one that’s mandatory by UAE law. It’s important to note that this insurance WILL NOT pay for any damage to you or your car.
Since it’s the most basic plan available, it also means it’s the cheapest. If your vehicle is old and isn’t worth much, you might not want to invest money in additional insurance policies and just stick with the mandatory third-party coverage.

2. Comprehensive Car Insurance
Comprehensive insurance covers almost everything that can happen to your car, like collision, fire damage or theft. It also includes Third-party insurance that’s required by law. If you have an expensive car and don’t want to pay for any repairs after an incident, or are afraid it might get stolen – comprehensive car insurance is the level you should get.

It’s possible to add or remove various features and covers, including (but not limited to):

  • Agency repair: Extend agency repair coverage for up to five years.
  • Personal accident cover for driver & passengers: Provides financial compensation if the driver or passenger sustain injuries in the event of an accident.
  • Emergency medical expenses: Covers medical expenses incurred by the driver or passengers.
  • Off-road: Covers damage to the vehicle while driving off-road.
  • Roadside assistance: Offers accident/breakdown recovery services that include tire replacement, towing, battery jump start, etc.
  • Personal belongings: Covers loss of or damage to your personal belongings while in the insured vehicle.
  • GCC cover: Extends territorial coverage to Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar.
  • New car replacement: Covers against total loss of a new vehicle with a brand new one of the same make, model, and specifications.
  • Natural calamities: Covers damage to the vehicle due to storms, floods, etc.
  • Fire & theft coverage: Covers damage to the vehicle due to fire or theft.
  • Dent repair: Covers the cost of paint-less dent removal.
  • Windscreen repair: Covers the cost of repairing or replacing the windscreen if broken or damaged.
  • Replacement of locks: Covers the cost of replacing the locks in case your car keys are stolen or lost.

3. Luxury Car Insurance
Luxury car insurance is a special category for more expensive vehicles. Brands that fall under this category include Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce.
The major difference between regular comprehensive car insurance and luxury car insurance is the price. The higher the value of your car is, the higher the costs are for insuring it. Some insurance companies consider these vehicles a high risk for many reasons: overall high value, expensive parts, increased risk of collision due to tremendous horsepower, and higher theft rates.

There are two main types of luxury cars: performance cars often called supercars or coupes like Ferrari and Aston Martin, and high-value vehicles like Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Performance cars are usually more expensive to insure than the high-value ones, mostly because of the high speeds associated with them. Naturally, you would want a fully comprehensive coverage for a luxury car, due to the cost of replacement parts and the risk of theft.

Specific covers that you should consider for your luxury cars are:

  • Collision and comprehensive insurance
  • Personal injury protection
  • GAP or new car replacement insurance

How To Get Cheap Car Insurance?

The best thing you should do when looking for the cheapest car insurance in UAE is to compare them online. It’s the easiest, most immediate step you can take that will save you plenty of cash.

There are a few things you can do if you want to lower your insurance premium:

  1. Buy the right car: When buying a car, always consider the insurance. Some vehicles are cheaper to insure than others, so be sure to check with several companies what’s the going rate for your model of choice.

  2. Limit your mileage: Don’t drive long distances is you don’t have to. All premiums are based on risk, so the more you drive, the more likely you are to get into a car accident. Lower mileage usually means cheaper car insurance.

  3. Increase your insurance excess: Excess is the part of the insurance claim that comes out of your pocket. The higher your voluntary excess is, the cheaper the premium. But you will have to pay more for car repairs yourself when and if you get into an accident.

  4. No Claims discount: Take advantage of your insurer’s No Claims Bonus. More about NCB and the discounts it can provide can be found further along in AskMjareb’s online car insurance guide.

  5. Avoid modifications: Think carefully before modifying your vehicle. It may be tempting to add special modifications to show off your unique style, but it also makes the car more attractive to thieves, which in turn could cause your insurance company to raise your premium.

  6. Pay only for what you need: Don’t purchase covers you don’t need or want. Extra cover options, like off-road coverage or windscreen repair, can be useful, but they will naturally bump up your premium. Weigh the risk against the cost, and decide which ones you need and which ones you can live without.

What Determines The Price Of Your Insurance?

Most insurance companies look at the same few factors when calculating your car insurance payment quote.

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Vehicle type
  • Vehicle age
  • How long you’ve had your driver’s license
  • Accident track record

The last one, the accident track record, is especially important, as it can drastically affect your annual insurance thanks to something called “No Claims Bonus.”

It pays to be a safe and courteous driver.
Beyond the obvious benefit of not getting into life-threatening accidents, you can also receive a discount of up to 20% off your insurance premium.

What Is a No Claims Bonus?

If you don’t make any insurance claims throughout the term of your insurance policy, you can be awarded a No Claims Bonus (NCB). This bonus, or discount, is provided by the insurance company and can save you quite a bit of money over the years.
The amount an NCB is worth changes from one insurer to the next, and it increases with every year in which you did not make any insurance claims. An NCB of more than five years is very likely to give you a significant discount on your premium.

How Can I Know If I’m Eligible For A No Claims Bonus?

The NCB usually updates automatically, and you’ll be able to see its effect when you renew your annual insurance policy. However, if you’re looking to change insurance companies, you’ll need to provide them with proof that you have not made any claims in the previous years, so they can calculate any discount you may deserve.

Some insurers may include such proof on the insurance renewal notices so you may want to consider hanging on to the most recent one. If not, you might find it on the cancelation letter you receive from your previous insurer.
However, not every car insurance company provides such information of its own free will. In that case, you’ll have to request it by phone, post, or electronic form.

Can I Lose My No Claims Discount?

Yes. If you make a claim on your car insurance policy, you’ll lose some, or even all, of your No Claims Bonus. However, that depends on whether you were at fault for the accident or not. If someone crashes into your car, they are clearly at fault, and your insurer can reclaim its payout from the other car’s insurance company. In that case, you’re NCB will remain intact.

When fault can’t be established, the insurers may decide to split the cost of the claims, and both drivers’ No Claims discount will be affected.
These situations can include car theft or “acts of God” like floods and storms.

Can I Protect My No Claims Bonus?

If you’re afraid of losing your NCB, some car insurers offer an option to protect it from incidents such as theft. It costs a little extra, but it will allow you to make a claim or two a year without it affecting your discount when you renew your policy.

Bear in mind that it won’t necessarily prevent your premium from going up, as your accident track record is a factor for calculating your monthly payment. However, you will retain your 5%, 10% or 20% discount off the final price. That said, there’s no guarantee that it’ll be lower than the previous year, since your overall premium has gone up, plus you’re now paying extra for the No Claims Bonus protection.

Each insurance company has different rules regarding how many claims are allowed as part of the No Claims protection before you lose it.

How To Choose The Best VPN

If you want to protect your privacy when going online or access every geo-restricted TV show on Netflix, using a VPN or a proxy server is the solution for you.

Protecting your information online is crucial these days when our privacy is attacked on all sides. Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) can see everything you do online, and keep a detailed record. In some countries, they can even block you from accessing certain sites or content.

A VPN is an easy, cheap and legal option that can free you from any online restrictions and hide your identity from anyone that comes snooping.

Expert's Advice

Security is the most important thing

Ensure your safety and privacy. Pick a VPN with robust and guaranteed encryption protocols, so your data is kept private from ISPs, governments, and local network admin tracking. An essential additional option is the Kill-switch feature, which is designed to shut down your connection to prevent accidental exposure of your public IP address.

Try before you buy

As you can tell, there are many factors to consider before finding the right VPN that suits your needs and region. Make sure that it supports your OS of choice and the wide array of online activities. That’s why it makes perfect sense to take advantage of the trial periods many providers offer. If the VPN you set your mind on doesn’t have a trial period, it might have a “money back” policy for the first few days or even months.

Avoid slow and sluggish VPN connections

Look for a VPN provider that offers configuration options. Different configurations for different purposes ensure that you always have speed on your side, whether you’ll be using the VPN for streaming or peer-to-peer activities. Protecting your private information is all good and well, but it’s pretty pointless if downloads take forever and you can’t stream your favorite shows in HD while you wait.

Connect with a click

When choosing the ideal service, don’t make compromises on an easy and hassle-free user experience. If you need to have a degree in computer science to connect to your VPN server, forget it. The process should be smooth and intuitive, with a user-friendly interface any beginner can understand. If you find yourself struggling to configure your VPN connection, don’t hesitate to move to a different provider.

24/7 support makes a difference

The lack of helpful and readily available customer assistance should be a deal breaker. Always look for a provider that values your time and invests in serving you. Having a useful live chat or dedicated 24/7 email help desk will change your VPN experience and ensure you won’t get stuck without a safe internet connection.

Common VPN Questions Answered

What is a VPN?

A VPN, or a Virtual Private Network, creates a heavily encrypted “tunnel” between your device and a proxy server. Your entire internet traffic goes through this secure tunnel, hidden from prying eyes. You only access the “public” internet from the VPN server, meaning it is near impossible to trace your real location and IP. All your traffic appears to be coming from that proxy, and not your own computer or smartphone.

In essence, the best VPNs promise anonymity, privacy, and protection.

Is VPN illegal in UAE?

It’s a bit tricky to understand how the United Arab Emirates law views VPN. A recent amendment to the country’s Federal Cyber Crimes Law states that using an illegal VPN service can result in jail time and up to AED 500,000 in fines.

But if we break it down, we discover that it is legal for individuals to use a legal VPN service, as long as it isn’t used for illegal activities such as hacking, online theft, Piracy, and visiting pornography or anti-government sites. In summary, you should be able to use VPN in the UAE as long as the VPN service provider is legal and you’re not committing any cyber-crimes while connected to a VPN server.

If you still have any doubts about whether you should use a VPN in the UAE, we suggest you seek professional counsel.

Can I use a proxy instead of a VPN?

Both proxy and VPN connect you to a remote server and make it appear like you’re connecting to the internet from a different country. Even so, they are not exactly the same. A proxy merely hides your IP address. It does not encrypt your traffic or remove any other identifying information from your connection. In other words, a proxy does not protect your privacy. They also only work on specific applications, not computer-wide. You need to configure a proxy connection for every app, like your web browser or torrent client separately.

Proxies are only useful for low-risk tasks, like accessing geo-restricted websites and streaming services, or bypassing IP-based blocks. If you want to be sure you are entirely protected online, use a VPN.

Why do I need a VPN?

The main reasons why you would want to use a VPN are privacy and protection. Consider the following example: you’re sitting in a coffee shop, and about to connect to the public wi-fi available there. But do you know who’s monitoring the traffic? How can you even tell if the network is legit and not a trap set by an industrious hacker who’s after your passwords, banking data, and credit card numbers? Using a VPN, you can rest assured that no one on any public wi-fi can intercept your private information – not even the operators of the network themselves, and that includes the ISP.

Another use for a VPN is to bypass any geo-restrictions and to gain access to blocked content or websites. In some GCC countries, like the UAE, certain sites are blocked when using a regular internet connection. With a VPN, you can have your web traffic securely tunneled to a different country, where these websites are opened to all. And because VPNs encrypt your data, your identity will be protected while doing so. The same goes for streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Video Prime. So use VPN if you want to unlock all the online content and not just the movies and TV shows available in your country.

Should I use a free VPN?

Using a free VPN is always a compelling option, but a risky one. Sure, it’s free, but as we all know by now – free always comes at a price. Many free VPN services don’t offer the most secure connections (sometimes they don’t even encrypt your data), so while you can access restricted content, you won’t do this anonymously.

Furthermore, if you don’t pay for your VPN, the provider might be making it’s money some other way. It could be ads, which are annoying, to say the least, or worse – selling your data. Like ISPs, VPNs have the ability to track all the traffic that goes through them. Most paid VPNs in UAE don’t collect that data since privacy is one of the strongest selling-points they offer. Free VPNs, however, might gather all the data on the traffic you’re sending through them, and sell it to advertisers or corporations. It also means free VPNs keep a record of your online activity, which beats the point of using a VPN to protect your identity, privacy, and anonymity.

Can I use a VPN on my smartphone?

Absolutely. Most well-established VPNs in UAE have a mobile VPN app you can use with both Android and iPhone.

Be sure to double check if the VPN service of your choice offers a downloadable app. That way, you can safely browse from your phone or tablet on any wi-fi network without having to worry if it’s secure or not. Bear in mind that your smartphone or tablet are considered a separate device, and will count towards the “simultaneous connections” limit most VPNs have (usually around 5 different devices).
